Understanding Stress and Vicarious Trauma

Professional Development Session: This webinar has been approved for 0.30 CEU’s in Professional Studies and assumes participants will enter with little/some knowledge of this topic Participants will explore the dynamics of stress and vicarious trauma that can arise during interpreting and be guided in decompression and management techniques.  This workshop will explore the idea of building an emotional immune system through preventative techniques, the first defense against stress and vicarious trauma.  Proactive approaches to maintaining emotional and mental balance can be utilized by the interpreter for managing the impact of stress and vicarious trauma.

The Presenter: Dr. Diane Gross is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Interpreter Trainer who specializes in helping interpreters improve their biomechanics and ergonomics. Dr. Gross worked as a certified sign language interpreter for more than 25 years in a variety of venues. While a staff interpreter at The National Technical Institute for the Deaf, she served as Project Coordinator and Senior Writer in the development of training materials on the prevention and management of interpreting-related injury. Dr. Gross has written several books and numerous articles for the health section of the VIEWS.
