Common practice does not mean uniform practice\, but more or less the adherence to standard or professional norms. Consider the interpreting community – do we observe common practice regarding ethical decision making\, education\, role and responsibilities\, and certification. This workshop will briefly address common practices yet the primary focus will be on the application of the Code of Professional Conduct (deontological versus teleological). \n  \nFacilitated by William F. Unfortunately\, the profession has not been consistent in how it guides and supports interpreters in making the right decision. Most ethical codes in the profession frame ethical ideals as\, “interpreters always…” and “interpreters never…”. Yet\, how often is the phrase\, “it depends on the situation…” uttered by interpreters? To add to the confusion\, interpreters hear from trainers and colleagues that interpreters are just\, “conduits” or should be “invisible”. Or\, interpreters hear the exact opposite: interpreters are “advocates” or they are “members of the team”.  \nNeither a list of rules nor a series of metaphors can effectively advance ethical thought and action in a practice profession. What is needed instead is a set of professional values and the skills needed to effectively apply those values in a particular context. A values-based framework effectively accounts for the complex work of interpreters do — and does so in a manner that parallels other practice professions.  \nThis presentation addresses the concerns of the current ethical dialogue in the field and instead offers interpreting practitioners a values-based teleological process for effectively analyzing each assignment for contextual factors and decision consequences.  \nAt the conclusion of the training\, participants will be able to:\n\nIdentify the primary concerns for the popular frameworks used in interpreting\nDefine a practice profession and the implications of this shift in interpreting \nExplain DC-S as a work analysis tool and a decision-making model \nOutline the values to be considered in decision-making in various community settings\nExplain the professional development tool of supervision and reflective practice\n\nDemand Control Schema Textbook is being offered at a discount of $35 (regularly $49.95) plus an additional $4 for shipping. These book orders will be handled by the presenter and not IRID. \nPlease contact Robyn K. Dean directly at: robyn@demandcontrolschema.com if you would like to purchase a copy. \nAudience\nThis workshop is intended for working interpreters and interpreting students. We propose that it occurs over time in an environment that we refer to this space as brave space. This setting allows the introduction of new and different ideas\, as well as the shaping of current beliefs; this time of growth and change requires that our mind reconcile or make space for such ideals and sometimes that growth can be uncomfortable. This workshop will discuss how ethical values and decision making can be strengthened by healthy interpersonal skills (ethical dilemmas will be utilized as context for reaching the educational objectives).\n\n\nFacilitated by William F.
